Here are ten simple water conservation tips to consider
- Regularly check for faucets drips and pipes for leaks. A small drip from a worn faucet washer can waste 50 litres of water per day. Larger leaks, especially in underground pipe leaks can waste hundreds of litres.
- Check your toilets for leaks. You can put a little food coloring into your toilet cistern, if the colour starts to appear in the toilet bowl without flushing, you have a leak that needs to be repaired soonest possible. Call Casotti Plumbers we can get it repaired or replacement.
- Make use your water meter to determine if you have an undetected water leak. Firstly, you read your home water meter. Secondly don’t use any water. And then after two hours read the meter again. - Install flow faucet aerators and water saving shower heads. Water saving shower heads with low flow restrictors are inexpensive and easy install; which can save you 47% energy cost of your showers. - In line with 4 above, take shorter showers. A four-minute shower will use about 70 to 150 litres of water. You must always be conscious to reduce your water usage, for example, turn off your shower water during your soap up, then turn it back on to rinse.
- Make it a habit to turn off your water when you are brushing your teeth Don’t keep your water running while you are brushing your teeth.
- Use your washing machine and dishwasher for only full loads only. If required for partial loads clothes washing, you will need to adjust your water levels to match your washing load.Replace old clothes machines that comply with the minimum Water Efficiency Standard (WES) which has came to effect on 1 November 2011.
- Don’t leave your water running for rinsing when washing dishes by hand Make use of your double basin if you have one. Fill one basin with soap water and the other with rinse water. For single basin sink, after washing your dishes, gather them on a dish rack and rinse them with a panful of water. Dual swivel aerators tap wares are very common and available to make this easier.
- Don’t let the faucet water run while you are cleaning your vegetables Always rinse your vegetables in a pan of clean water.
- Use a broom and not a hose, to clean driveways and sidewalks Hosing down your driveway/ walkways is not Water Wise!
